Silver 100 Walk 2012
To encourage healthy living for the elderly and provide a platform event where the youth of Singapore are engaged in a meaningful and interactive way with the ‘silver generation’. Rotary Club of Bugis Junction (RCBJ) and Young NTUC jointly organise the inaugural Silver 100 Walk 2012.
Held on 8 April 2012, Sunday from 8 am to 12 noon, the Silver 100 Walk featured started from Bayfront Link at Marina Bay Sands to the NTUC Centre at One Marina Boulevard, allowing participants young and old to enjoy the beautiful Marina Bay scenery. The concept was to encourage a ‘walking pair’ of one youth and one elderly participant with a combined age of 100 to interact while taking the stroll along the Marina Bay Promenade, therefore the name Silver 100 Walk.
Mr Lim Boon Heng, Chairman of NTUC Eldercare was the Guest of Honour. After a rousing lion dance performance by the Cabin Crew ECA Group, District 3310 DGN Chew Ghim Bok, representing RCBJ and as main sponsor of Elite KSB Holdings, handed over a mock key to Mr. Lim. This was to signify the club’s efforts in raising a total of more than $71,000 from corporate and private donors, fellow RCBJ Rotarians, and Walk participants over a period of more than 6 months.
The funds raised was for the purchase of a purpose-built transport vehicle used to ferry both ambulant as well as wheelchair bound elderly from their homes to the NTUC Rotary Silver Circle – Marsiling Centre.
About 700 participants and volunteers from as young as 6 years to the oldest of 84 years old came for the event. At the end of the Walk, there were photo shoots with Mr Lim for all participants.
Participants were also entertained by the Cabin Crew ECA Group with a series of modern song and dance performances inside the NTUC Centre Auditorium. Sponsored light snacks and bento lunches were provided for all under the courtesy of NTUC Foodfare. Other than a video promoting awareness on Dementia and a health talk by Emtech Wellness, there were free health checks available for all outside the auditorium by Medical Partners & the Healthtrends Specialists . Each registered participant was also given $10 worth of NTUC FairPrice voucher sponsored by the NTUC FairPrice Foundation plus a souvenir umbrella bearing the logos of Silver 100 Walk, RCBJ and Emtech Wellness.
